Children, not tourist attractions: keeping families together in Myanmar

Andy Brown is Regional Communication Specialist for UNICEF East Asia and Pacific

Every twenty minutes, a busy ferry crosses the river from downtown Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, to the rural village of Dala on the opposite bank. On a recent morning, the ferry was packed with local commuters wearing Burmese ‘longyi’ skirts, vendors selling speckled eggs and cigarettes, and a handful of adventurous tourists.

My commitment to help children in hard to reach areas (Naga Self-Administrative Region)

By Nay Myo Thu, Health Officer, UNICEF Myanmar

I was part of the seven-member response team that travel to Lahe Township, in Naga Self-administrative Region, after a measles outbreak was confirmed. We took a flight from Mandalay to Khamti, a remote town in Sagaing Region. Then, we crossed Chindwin river by a small boat to reach Sin Thay village. From there,  we took a jeep to go the capital of Naga, Lahe. Fortunately,  the road was dry and we were able to reach our destination in 6 hours. When it rains, landslides are very common, blocking roads and making the journey much longer. Although the road is rough, bummpy and in some parts  very muddy,  we enjoyed the drive over the Naga hills, including the highest one - Htein Nyo mountain, which is over 5,000 ft high.

Immunization and Nutrition Activities in a remote village in Kayin State

By Tin Aung, Health and Nutrition Specialist, Mawlamyine UNICEF Field Office

In August, I accompanied a midwife on her mission to an out-of-reach area, and observed the routine immunization, vitamin A supplementation and deworming activities as part of the National Nutrition Promotion Month. These activities took place in Mel Ta Le village in Kya Inn Seik Gyi Township, Kayin State. This village, which is 10 kilometre away from the nearest rural health sub-centre, can only be reachable during the rainy season by ““trolley jeep””, as it is known in Myanmar.

A New life after the Storm

By Mariana Palavra

Kale, Sagaing Region – Since last year, Ma Thida Oo’s life has been through choppy waters. It all started at the end of July 2015, when cyclone Komen brought one week of heavy rain and floods to Kyaukka village, in Sagaing Region. “I had never seen anything like that before”, recalls Ma Thida Oo. “The level of the river water rose so much, many boats sank and our house was surrounded by water”. As the waters threatened to take their house and lives away, the 19 year old fled with her husband, parents and brother to the nearest monastery, located a few meters up on the hill, some 20 minutes driving from Kale Township.

Did you know that vaccines are sensitive biological products?  To maintain quality, vaccines must be protected from extreme temperatures. The system used for storing vaccines in good condition is called the cold chain.

From Floods to Volunteerism

By Mariana Palavra

June 2016, Hakha, Chin State - Van Tin Pen was very scared. She saw six or seven houses collapsing, landslides all over and she was running out of food. This was in July 2015, when cyclone Komen hit Myanmar, causing some of the worst floods in the last 40 years, particularly in Chin State.  “We were blocked for more than two weeks”, recalls the 34 year old who lives in a small village from Hakha township. “Not only did we not have food, but also all the pipelines were washed away, thus cutting off our access to safe water.”

A second chance at education produces first class results

By Kyaw Lwin Latt and Deirdre Naughton

Yangon, Myanmar- Kyaw Zaw Moe straightens his shirt and dips his head respectfully at the bottom step before he makes his way humbly but purposefully onto the stage at the Learning Hub, Yangon University of Education. He is greeted by rapturous applause from the audience, expressing their congratulations for his remarkable achievement. The applause emanates from the teacher who supported Kyaw Zaw Moe in his Sittwe school, to teachers across the Non-Formal primary Education network, to high-ranking Ministry of Education officials, all of whom are audience members. At 17, having earlier dropped out of school, he was given a second chance at education when he joined the Non-Formal Primary Education (NFPE) model, funded by the Quality Basic Education Programme (QBEP) through UNICEF.

Solar pumps bring safe water to families in Myanmar

By Emily Bamford

In a Myanmar community affected by drought, easy access to safe water is hard to come by. With support from UNICEF, the Government and the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DfID), the village purchased a solar powered water pump and now all households get water pumped straight to their homes.

MAGWAY REGION, Myanmar, 3 June 2016 – Mon Taw village is a community located in Pauk Township, north-western Myanmar. Most regions of the country receive large amounts of rainfall each year, but Magway regularly experiences droughts, which are being exacerbated by the impacts of climate change.

As a result, safe water is often only available 100 metres below the surface of the ground, making it very difficult to access.

During my meeting trip with Karen Education Department (KED) in Myawaddy, I observed Myawaddy and Kawkareik Township Kindergarten (KG) trainings led by the Ministry of Education (MoE). Preparatory work on the materials for this training was funded by the Quality Basic Education Programme (QBEP) which aims to support the Government of Myanmar to improve access to quality school readiness and primary level education for all children.  This preparatory work was then taken a step further by the MoE.

Early Childhood Development, Community and School: The critical links

Quality Basic Education Programme Field Visit, Feb 2016

When it comes to Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD), we already know that early interventions positively impact young children’s transition to primary level.  Evidence on enrolment and retention is compelling, but think of the positive implications of the ECCD-community-school linkage:  Strong linkages from ECCD to school and community can also yield multiple benefits.
