၂၀၁၉ခုႏွစ္၊ မတ္လ - အသက္ ၄၇ ႏွစ္အရြယ္ ကိုစိုင္းအြမ္တစ္ေယာက္ အရင္ကလုပ္ဖို႔ အစီအစဥ္မရွိခဲ့တဲ့ အလုပ္တစ္ခုကို လုပ္ႏုိင္ခဲ့ပါၿပီ။ သူက သူ႔မိသားစုအတြက္ အိမ္သာတစ္လုံး ေဆာက္လုိက္တာပါပဲ။

ျမန္မာႏုိင္ငံ ရွမ္းျပည္ေတာင္ပိုင္း ဆီဆုိင္ၿမိဳ႕နယ္ ပန္ကန္းရြာေလးက ကေလးႏွစ္ေယာက္ ဖခင္ျဖစ္သူဟာ သူ႔ရဲ႕ လုပ္ေဆာင္ခ်က္ေတြက မိသားစုအတြက္သာမက ရြာေလးရဲ႕ က်န္းမာေရးကိုပါ တိုးတက္ ေကာင္းမြန္ေစမယ္ဆုိတာ နားလည္သေဘာေပါက္ခဲ့ပါတယ္။

“ဝမ္းပ်က္ဝမ္းေလွ်ာ ေရာဂါဆိုတာ ကြင္းျပင္ေတြ ခ်ဳံေတာေတြထဲ ေတာထုိင္ အညစ္အေၾကးစြန္႔တာနဲ႔ ဆက္စပ္ေနမွန္း ကၽြန္ေတာ္ သိလိုက္ရတဲ့အခ်ိန္မွာ အိမ္သာေတြရဲ႕ အေရးပါမႈကို နားလည္သြားတယ္။ ဒီေတာ့ အိမ္သာေဆာက္ဖို႔ကို ကၽြန္ေတာ္ စိတ္ထက္သန္လာခဲ့တယ္။ ကၽြန္ေတာ့္မွာ ပိုက္ဆံမ်ားမ်ားစားစား မရွိေပမဲ့ ေနာက္မွလုပ္မေနဘဲ အခုပဲ အိမ္သာေဆာက္ေနပါၿပီ”လို႔ ကေလးႏွစ္ေယာက္ ဖခင္ျဖစ္သူက ေျပာျပခဲ့ပါတယ္။

Building your own latrine: Community-led total sanitation in southern Shan State

March, 2019 - Sai Awan, 47, has done something he didn’t plan to do. He has built his family a latrine.

In Pak Kan village in Hsi Seing Township of Myanmar’s Southern Shan State, the father of two is convinced his efforts will improve the health of his family and his village.

 “When I learned that diarrhoea is related to open defecation, I realized the importance of latrines and became passionate about building them. Even though I don’t have much money, I’m doing it now, not later, “ said the father of two.

Married for eleven years, Sai Awan and his family live in a bamboo house and until recently all the family members shared a latrine at a relative’s house or practiced open defecation behind the bushes in the nearby fields.

My name is Naw Sae Phaw and I am a teacher of a primary school of Thee Kwe Kaw village, Kyarinseikygi Township. I have been teaching in this very remote village of Kayin Sate, in the South-East Myanmar, for about a year. There are 30 children in the school.

ဇြန္ ၂၀၁၆၊ ဟားခါး၊ ခ်င္းျပည္နယ္ - ဗန္တင္းပန္မွာ လြန္စြာေၾကာက္ရြံ႕ေနသည္။ အိမ္ ၆လံုး ၇လံုး ၿပိဳက်သြားၿပီး ေျမေတြၿပိဳေနတာကို ျမင္ေနရသည္။ သူမမွာ အစားအစာလည္း ျပတ္လတ္ေနၿပီ ျဖစ္သည္။ ယင္းျဖစ္ရပ္မွာ ၂၀၁၅ ခုႏွစ္ ဇူလုိင္လက ျမန္မာႏုိင္ငံကို ကုိမန္ ဆိုင္ကလံုးမုန္တုိင္း တိုက္ခတ္စဥ္က ျဖစ္ပြားခဲ့ျခင္းျဖစ္သည္။ ယင္းမုန္တုိင္းေၾကာင့္ ႏွစ္၄၀အတြင္း အဆိုးရြားဆံုး ေရႀကီးမႈမ်ား ျဖစ္ေပၚခဲ့သည္။ အထူးသျဖင့္ ခ်င္းျပည္နယ္တြင္ ပိုမိုဆုိးရြားသည္။ “ကၽြန္မတို႔ ႏွစ္ပတ္ေက်ာ္ ပိတ္မိေနခဲ့တယ္” ဟု ဟားခါးၿမိဳ႕နယ္ရွိ ရြာေလးတစ္ရြာတြင္ ေနထုိင္ေသာ အသက္ ၃၄ ႏွစ္အရြယ္ ဗန္တင္းပန္က ျပန္ေျပာျပ သည္။ “ကၽြန္မတုိ႔မွာ အစားအစာမရွိ႐ံုသာမကဘူး။ ေရပိုက္လိုင္းေတြက ေရနဲ႔အတူ ေျမာပါသြားတယ္။ အဲဒါေၾကာင့္ ေသာက္သံုးလုိ႔ရတဲ့ ေရလည္း ျပတ္သြားတယ္” ဟု ၎က ဆုိသည္။

From Floods to Volunteerism

June 2016, Hakha, Chin State - Van Tin Pen was very scared. She saw six or seven houses collapsing, landslides all over and she was running out of food. This was in July 2015, when cyclone Komen hit Myanmar, causing some of the worst floods in the last 40 years, particularly in Chin State.  “We were blocked for more than two weeks”, recalls the 34 year old who lives in a small village from Hakha township. “Not only did we not have food, but also all the pipelines were washed away, thus cutting off our access to safe water.”

Choose handwashing, choose health

The annual Global Handwashing Day (October 15) celebrations are occasions to emphasise the role of handwashing with soap in the prevention of common but potentially lethal diseases such as diarrhoea, and many countries around the world are holding activities to promote the practice.  Here we take a look at one initiative which is already proving successful in Myanmar:

PANTANAW, 14 June 2013 – Villagers in Kadauksa accepted diarrhoea as a common illness not linking it to poor sanitation and hygiene conditions.
