It takes a village…

When children live in conflict affected areas or in camps for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP), their education will be one of the first things to be compromised. But when communities and local officials realize the future of those vulnerable children can be brighter through education, then it will be possible to keep children learning even in difficult circumstances.

In Kachin State, following the conflict in April 2018, children from villages in Njang Yang Township, including students and teachers from Zup Mai Yang village, took shelter in Tang Hpre IDP camp. Initially, the children were not able to start the 2018-2019 academic year. However, with the collaboration of the local community, State Parliamentarians and district education authorities children like Hkun Mai are now able to learn within the camp.

Every year, 20th November, marks the day when the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, was adopted. In Myanmar, this year, children and adolescents took centre stage making it a day ‘for children, by children’. From the capital, Nay Pyi Taw, to Mandalay Region and Rakhine State, children and adolescents urged adults to recognise their rights and to hear their concerns and aspirations. Here are some of the voices of children and adolescents that UNICEF and the Department of Social Welfare helped to elevate throughout the country.

Executive Directors and Board members from six UNICEF National Committees visit Myanmar

From 21-23 October 2018, Executive Directors and senior Board members from six UNICEF National Committees from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Spain, visited UNICEF’s programmes in Myanmar to understand how UNICEF is supporting the Myanmar Government to meet the needs of children in the country. Their visit included both development and humanitarian programmes to understand first-hand what it means to be there for every child, no matter what their ethnicity, community, religion or language.

Child Friendly Schools’ training greatly improved my teaching skills

Buthidaung, Rakhine State, 7 September 2018 - Phyu Nway Moe is a Grade 2 Assistant Teacher who has worked at the Basic Education State High School (2) in Buthidaung for more than 10 years. 

Up until 2018, Phyu taught a ‘teacher-centred’ method in her class, focusing activities more on her as the teacher. However, when the Ministry of Education introduced a new curriculum for her class this year, she noticed a difference in which the new curriculum increases demands on both teachers, in the preparation of classes and teaching materials, and pupils, in their active participation in class exercises.

The Child Friendly Schools (CFS), provided by the Department of Basic Education with support from UNICEF through the funding from the Government of Japan, is aimed to help teachers through this transition to the new curriculum. The training is also combined with the Language Enrichment programme, to help teachers working with children whose mother tongue is not Myanmar.

On World Cleanup Day, UNICEF Sittwe Office organizes environmental action for children

SITTWE, RAKHINE STATE, 15 September 2018 - The UNICEF Field Office in Sittwe, Rakhine State, organized a significant clean-up of the local beach on World Cleanup Day 2018. More than 300 participants from UNICEF, people in the local community and international partners in Sittwe and came together during the weekend to clean a six kilometre stretch of beach in the capital of Rakhine State.

“Supporting the provision of clean and safe areas for children is one of our priorities. We set a sign by inviting our partners and the community in Sittwe to join us on World Clean-up Day and translate our words into action together,” said Mandie Alexander, Chief of Field Office for UNICEF in Sittwe. “We are grateful for the support from the local municipality in the proper disposal of the garbage we collected on the beach.”

Reaching children in rural areas of Shan State by providing maternal and child care knowledge

MAGYI SEIK, SHAN STATE - As a member of the team from UNICEF that travelled to Taunggyi Town in Shan State, for data collection on issues of maternal and child health in the area, my main role was to interview local health teams, mothers and children.  After an hour of driving towards Inle Lake from Taunggyi and after forty minutes of boat ride, our team finally reached a government health facility supported by UNICEF located in a village called Magyi Seik.

က်ိဳင္းတံု၊ ၂၀၁၈ခုႏွစ္၊ ဇူလိုင္လ - မသက္သက္ေအာင္ အခ်ိန္ျပည့္မိခင္တစ္ေယာက္မျဖစ္ခင္ သူမသည္ ေက်ာင္းဆရာမတစ္ဦး ျဖစ္ခဲ႔သည္။ “ကၽြန္မ ရဲေမတစ္ဦးျဖစ္ခ်င္ခဲ႔တာ၊ ကၽြန္မထင္တာက အဲဒီဝတ္စံုက ယံုၾကည္မွဳကို တိုးပြားေစတယ္။”ဟု မသက္သက္ေအာင္မွ ျပံဳး၍ေျပာသည္။ “ကၽြန္မမိခင္တစ္ေယာက္ျဖစ္ျပီး ေနာက္မွာေတာ႔ ကၽြန္မသမီးေလးကို ေစာင္႔ေရွာက္ရတယ္၊ ကၽြန္မအေမကို အိမ္အလုပ္ေတြကူညီေပးျပီး ရပ္ရြာလူထု ေဆြးေႏြးပြဲေတြမွာ ပါဝင္ေလ႔ရိွပါတယ္။”

Access to knowledge brings hope to mothers in eastern Shan State

In 2017, mothers in the small Wan Pan Akhar village in eastern Shan State began accessing nutrtion and Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) services. These nutrtion and health programmes are now changing how children are raised and have become a reason of happiness for mothers like Ma Thet Thet Aung.

KENG TUNG, July 2018 - Before Ma Thet Thet Aung became a full-time mother, she used to work as a teacher. “But, I really wanted to become a police woman. I think the uniform exude confidence,” says Ma Thet Thet Aung with a smile. “Ever since I became a mother, I look after my daughter; help my mother with house chores and take part in our community group discussions.”

KENG TUNG, July 2018 - Wan Pan Akhar is a small village, an hour of bumpy ride across the green paddy fields from Keng Tung town in eastern Shan State. Here is where Ma Aye Aye Aung lives with her family including her one-year-old boy, Kaung Htike San. In 2017, UNICEF started supporting the Ministry of Health and Sports to provide trainings on nutrition and MNCH practices for volunteer health workers in eastern Shan State. When the training opportunity came to her village, Ma Aye Aye Aung was one of the first to volunteer. “I enrolled to the auxiliary midwife training three months ago. Now, I have a strong passion to give back this knowledge to mothers like me in my community,” says Ma Aye Aye Aung.

Displaced adolescent girls bear the brunt of funding cuts for menstrual hygiene

“It’s difficult,” says 19-year old Zaw Mar Luu very shyly. This is an issue often not spoken about in IDP camps. “Usually I keep my used sanitary pads in a plastic bag until the garbage truck comes to collect from the main waste bin. But it only comes once a week” she adds.

Armed with new knowledge, children and mothers in most landmine-contaminated State are eager to teach others

As children and women in Kachin learn about the dangers of landmines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) through Mine Risk Education (MRE) sessions, many are eager to share their new knowledge with their family, friends and others in their community. Read some of their testimonies.

Water on tap makes life flow better in Kayin village

For as long back as people can remember, the four-kilometer walk to the nearest water supply had a big effect on the life of residents of Pyin Kadoe Kone village in Myanmar’s Kayin State. 

As well as forcing villagers to undertake long hours of hard work carrying water home from the Don Ta Mi river, the lack of a ready water supply meant that open defecation was common around the village, making children and women more vulnerable, especially at night. ‘‘No water = no latrines,” said the village head.

Moving forward together: Starting an adolescent-led organization in Shan State

“We really enjoy doing social activities together, so we wanted to form a group.’’

That’s the view from a young person in Shan State in  eastern Myanmar who is part of a brand new civil society organization setting out to address different challenges facing local youth. 

Shan State is the country’s largest state and is home to around 1.2 million adolescents, or 12 percent of the total national adolescent population.  

UNICEF started working on adolescent engagement activities in the state in 2017, with the support of Pearson. Under the UPSHIFT program, adolescents were mobilized into groups and provided with trainings to equip them with 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration and team work, problem solving and creativity.

Harder than it looks: Becoming an adolescent learning facilitator

At age 17, high school graduate Khum Hein Tet Soe couldn’t decide what future to pursue. Should he try to be a business man, or an information technology specialist, or something completely different?

He checked out private schools that might teach him useful skills, but he couldn’t find the right one. The schools were expensive, and the quality of teaching didn’t seem to match the cost. Distance education college wasn’t a solution either.

Showing the way: Adolescents lead campaign to prevent drug use in Myanmar

What can you achieve in one short week? Plenty, according to young people who ran a large drug use prevention campaign among their peers in Myanmar during early January, 2018.

The landmark campaign held in the country’s four biggest cities took place under an adolescent engagement program being implemented by UNICEF in Myanmar, with the support of Pearson. The UPSHIFT program supports adolescents to become social innovators in their communities, through trainings in 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration and team work, problem solving and creativity.

Community members take the lead to improve sanitation in Rakhine

Rakhine State is one of the poorest and most isolated parts of Myanmar. Less than half (48 per cent) of the people have access to a hygienic toilet – one of the lowest levels in Myanmar; while only 58 per cent of people living in the State have access to safe drinking water. To help change this situation, UNICEF is working with the local government and the Myanmar Red Cross Society to encourage communities to take the lead in building sanitary latrines in three Townships.

Community taps wash away women’s water burdens in Rakhine’s Kyin Ni Pyin camp

In 2012 inter-communal and inter-religious conflict between majority Buddhist and minority Muslim communities forced some 129,000 people from Muslim communities to flee their homes in Rakhine State, Myanmar. In some cases entire villages were relocated to congested camps for Internally Displaced People (IDPs). Su Li Pha Ran, located in Pauktaw Township, is one of them.

ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံ၏ ရခိုင္ျပည္နယ္အေနာက္ပိုင္းေဒသသည္ ဆင္းရဲႏြမ္းပါးဆံုးေဒသတစ္ခုျဖစ္ျပီး အထီးက်န္တည္ရိွေနသည့္ ေနရာတစ္ခုလည္းျဖစ္သည့္အတြက္ တစ္ခါတစ္ရံ ကေလးမ်ား၏ ပညာေရးကို ထိခိုက္ေစပါသည္။ မိသားစုမ်ားအေနျဖင့္ သူတို႔၏ ကေလးမ်ားကို ေက်ာင္းပို႔ရန္ ကုန္က်စရိတ္အတြက္   ၾကိဳးပမ္းၾကရသည္။ ထို႔အတြက္ေၾကာင္႔ ေက်ာင္းထြက္ႏွဳန္းအလြန္ျမင္႔မားပါသည္။ အလားတူ ေက်ာင္းသံုးပစၥည္းမ်ား လံုေလာက္မွဳမရိွျခင္းႏွင့္ ျပည္နယ္တစ္လႊား အရည္အခ်င္းျပည့္စံုသည့္ ဆရာ၊ဆရာမမ်ား ေလ်ာ႔နည္းလာျခင္းေၾကာင့္ ၃၀%ေသာ ကေလးမ်ားသည္ မူလတန္းေက်ာင္းမ်ားတြင္ ေက်ာင္းအပ္ႏွံမွဳ မလုပ္ၾကသည့္အတြက္ အဆင့္ျမင့္ပညာသင္ယူႏိုင္သည့္  နည္းလမ္းမ်ားသည္ စိုးရိိမ္ဖြယ္ရာေကာင္းေအာင္ကို နည္းပါးလာေနပါသည္။

Towards a brighter future: Securing access to quality education for all children in Rakhine

Myanmar’s western Rakhine State is one of the poorest and most isolated parts of Myanmar, and often it is children’s education that suffers. Many families struggle to cover the costs of sending their children to school, resulting in soaring dropout rates. Meanwhile, a shortage of adequate school facilities and qualified teachers across the State means that almost 30% of children are not enrolled in primary school and options for higher education are worryingly scarce. 

Recurrent natural disasters and repeated episodes of intercommunal violence and conflict regularly disrupt education. This means that today adult illiteracy rates in Rakhine are 50% higher than the national average, according to the 2014 Census.
