၁၃ နှစ်အရွယ် မန်လမ်ကျိန်ရယ်၊ ၆ နှစ်နဲ့ ၈ နှစ်အရွယ် မောင်လေးနှစ်ယောက်ရယ်ဟာ ဘဝတစ်လျှောက်လုံး ဆိုးရွားတဲ့ အခြေအနေတစ်ခုမှာ နေထိုင်ခဲ့ကြရပါတယ်။

နေ့တိုင်း နေ့လယ် ၃ နာရီလောက်ဆို ဖခင်ဖြစ်သူ အသက် ၄၂ နှစ်အရွယ် ဟောက်ရှန်းမန် တစ်ယောက် ရွာထဲကဆိုင်မှာဖြစ်ဖြစ် အိမ်မှာဖြစ်ဖြစ် အရက်သောက်လေ့ရှိတယ်။ နာရီပိုင်းလောက်ကြာတာနဲ့ သူက သူတို့ရဲ့ အမေဖြစ်သူနဲ့စပြီးစကားများရန်ဖြစ်ကာ ရိုက်နှက်တာ၊ နံရံကိုလက်သီးနဲ့ထိုးတာတွေလုပ်ပါတယ်။ မိခင်က ဒေါသတကြီးထွက်သွားပြီး ညဘက်အိမ်ပြန်မလာတော့ဘူး။ ဒီလိုအချိန်မျိုးတွေမှာ မန်လမ်ကျိန်တစ်ယောက် ဖခင်ဖြစ်သူကို ကြောက်ရွံ့ပြီးအိပ်မပျော်ခဲ့ပါဘူး။ သူက အိပ်မက်ထဲမှာတောင် ရှိုက်ငိုနေတဲ့ မောင်လေးနှစ်ယောက်ကို နှစ်သိမ့်ပေးခဲ့ရပါတယ်။

“တစ်ခါတုန်းက အဖေက အမေ့ကို ပုဆိန်နဲ့ပစ်ပေါက်တော့မလို့။ အိမ်နီးချင်းတွေက ဝင်ပြီးတားခဲ့ရတယ်” လို့မန်လမ်ကျိန်က ပြန်ပြောပြပါတယ်။ “ဒါတွေအားလုံးက အဖေအရက်သောက်လို့ ဖြစ်ရတာ။ သမီး အဖေ့ကို အရက်မသောက်ဖို့ပြောပေမဲ့ အဖေက မဖြတ်နိုင်ဘူးလို့ ပြောတယ်။”
သူတို့အိမ်မီးလောင်ပျက်စီးသွားတဲ့အတွက် အခုဆိုရင် သူတို့မိသားစုက ရွာကကူညီဆောက်ပေးထားတဲ့ သစ်သားအိမ်လေး တစ်လုံးမှာ နေထိုင်နေကြပါတယ်။ မန်လမ်ကျိန်နဲ့ မောင်လေးတွေဟာ ချင်းပြည်မြောက်ပိုင်း တီးတိန်မြို့နယ်ထဲက ရွာနဲ့နီးတဲ့ တွန်းဇံအလယ်တန်းကျောင်းမှာ တက်ရောက်နေကြပါတယ်။ သူတို့ရဲ့ အရက်စွဲနေတဲ့ဖခင်နဲ့ မိခင်တို့ဟာ စားဝတ်နေရေးအတွက် ရုန်းကန်နေကြရပြီး ကျောင်းဝတ်စုံဝယ်ပေးဖို့ မတတ်နိုင်ကြပါဘူး။

Executive Directors and Board members from six UNICEF National Committees visit Myanmar

From 21-23 October 2018, Executive Directors and senior Board members from six UNICEF National Committees from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Spain, visited UNICEF’s programmes in Myanmar to understand how UNICEF is supporting the Myanmar Government to meet the needs of children in the country. Their visit included both development and humanitarian programmes to understand first-hand what it means to be there for every child, no matter what their ethnicity, community, religion or language.

Non-Formal Education: the only ‘second chance’ for many working children

Myanmar’s 2014 census found that 20 percent of the country’s school age children are out of school, with Kayin and other conflict affected States topping the list. 

Many of these children choose to work. Others are driven by poverty to help their families make ends meet. Too many end up in hazardous work settings. Today, child labour is widespread across Myanmar with some 1.2 million children aged 5-17 currently working.

Ongoing violence in Myanmar continues to impact children and their communities

Children in Myanmar, especially those in remote border areas, continue to suffer the consequences of protracted crises, inter-communal conflict and discrimination. In Rakhine State, inter-communal violence that erupted in 2012 continues to plague 120,000 internally displaced people (IDP), primarily women and children, spread across 40 camps or informal sites, and host communities.

ျမစ္ႀကီးနား၊ ကခ်င္ျပည္နယ္၊ ၂၀၁၆ခုႏွစ္၊ ႏိုဝင္ဘာလ - ဇြဲခ်စ္ (အမည္လႊဲ) မွာ သတၱမတန္းႏွင့္ ေက်ာင္းထြက္ခဲ့သည္။ အဲဒီအခ်ိိန္တြင္ ၎ထက္အသက္ႀကီးေသာ သူငယ္ခ်င္းမ်ားႏွင့္ တြဲခဲ့သည္။ ၎တို႔ အားလံုးမွာ စစ္တပ္ထဲသို႔ ဝင္လိုၾကၿပီး ဇြဲခ်စ္ကိုလည္း အတူဝင္ရန္ တုိက္တြန္းၾကသည္။ ဇြဲခ်စ္မွာ အသက္ ၁၆ ႏွစ္ႏွင့္ တပ္ထဲ ဝင္ခဲ့သည္။ “စစ္တပ္ထဲ ဝင္မယ္လို႔ တစ္ခါမွ အိပ္မက္မမက္ခဲ့ဘူး။ အဲဒီရည္မွန္းခ်က္လည္း မရွိခဲ့ဘူး။ ဘာလုပ္ရမယ္မွန္း မသိလုိ႔ သူငယ္ခ်င္းေတြ လုပ္တဲ့အတုိင္း လိုက္လုပ္လိုက္တာပါ” ဟု ၎က ျပန္ေျပာျပသည္။

A new life after spending teen years in the army

Myitkyina, Kachin State, November 2016 - Zwe Chit (fake name) left school when he was in grade eight. He started hanging out with four older friends. They all wanted to join the army and pushed him to do the same. He was 16 years old when he was recruited. “I never dreamed about being in the army. I didn’t have that ambition. I just followed my friends as I didn’t know what else to do with my life”, he recalls.

Ayeyarawaddy Region Myanmar - 17 August 2015: Assessing the flood situation in Ayeyarawaddy Region, my UNICEF colleagues and I visited seven townships and found all the water sources inundated with mud. Before the floods, people here used to get all their drinking water from the boreholes and hand dug wells. Now they must drink bottled water as the well water is unsafe for drinking or bathing. If people bathe in this dirty water, they can get scabies and other skin diseases.

No to Child Labour - Yes to Quality Education

The theme for 2015 World Day Against Child Labour is No to Child Labour - Yes to Quality Education. This year we are calling for free, compulsory and quality education for all children in Myanmar.

Many child labourers don't attend school regularly or at all. Free and compulsory education of good quality is key to ending child labour by giving children the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills. To find out more, read Wei Phyoe’s story below.

You can also download a flyer, notebook, and poster with drawings by children taking part in Non-Formal Primary Education (NFPE), supported by the Quality Basic Education Programme. The drawings were created as part of a workshop on child labour run by UNICEF, the Myanmar Literacy Resource Centre (MLRC) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Kayah State - Maw Pray Myar says she hasn’t “a fixed goal in life”, but in fact she wants to become a traditional singer. And while she waits to become a music star, the young Myanmar woman is already famous as one of the most active team leaders for the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) survey on Mine Risks, conducted for the first time ever, in three States and two Regions in the South-East of Myanmar, in 2014.

Yangon, Myanmar, January 2015: He entered the empty, austere room shyly. His eyes facing the floor, as if afraid of my voice and presence. I introduced myself and clumsily attempted to put a few words together in Burmese. Almost immediately, he looked straight into my eyes and greeted me with a big smile. That smile stayed on the entire time we spent together talking and conjuring up his childhood memories.

Myanmar Armed Forces release a further 80 children

Wearing traditional Myanmar checkered lungyis and starched white shirts with rounded collars, the young people sit down in rows of chairs and wait for further instruction. Most of them sit quietly but some fidget nervously and shift in their seats, craning their necks forward to see how the ceremony is progressing. 

They are 80 children and young people, all once recruited and used in the Tatmadaw. It is their final roll call as they prepare to leave the armed forces, discharged on the grounds that they should never have been enlisted in the first place.

Choose handwashing, choose health

The annual Global Handwashing Day (October 15) celebrations are occasions to emphasise the role of handwashing with soap in the prevention of common but potentially lethal diseases such as diarrhoea, and many countries around the world are holding activities to promote the practice.  Here we take a look at one initiative which is already proving successful in Myanmar:

Universal Children’s Day 2013 – children call for peace across Myanmar

 

Anna Richardson works on advocacy, communication and partnerships at UNICEF Myanmar. She was Campaign Coordinator for the launch of ‘Peace not Violence: Joining Hands Across Myanmar’ under the leadership of Campaign Director Kirsten Sjolander with the support of members of the UNICEF Myanmar advocacy and communication and child protection teams including Media Coordinator Pa Pa Khin and Child Protection Officer Khin Thiri Win.

On Saturday 23 November 2013, I was lucky enough to be a part of a show of hands against violence in Myanmar. What made this experience unique was that these were children’s hands with children’s words of peace - words like “love”, “kindness”, “understanding”. Some messages even tapped into societal issues related to violence like inter-communal relations and alcohol abuse. The words – and the children themselves – sent a strong message of non-violence, the sea of hands a striking display.
