In Myanmar, landmines and unexploded ordnance present a daily risk of injury or death for children

Nine of Myanmar’s 14 States and Regions are contaminated with landmines and explosive remnants of war both from ongoing and past conflicts. The country has some of the highest mine accident rates in the world. On average, every three days a person is a victim of landmines, according to Myanmar’s Mine Risk Working Group. One out of every three victims is a child.

Ongoing violence in Myanmar continues to impact children and their communities

Children in Myanmar, especially those in remote border areas, continue to suffer the consequences of protracted crises, inter-communal conflict and discrimination. In Rakhine State, inter-communal violence that erupted in 2012 continues to plague 120,000 internally displaced people (IDP), primarily women and children, spread across 40 camps or informal sites, and host communities.

Leaving no child behind in Myanmar's challenging transition

Myanmar, March 2017- Karin Hulshof visited Myanmar for the first time in her capacity of Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific Region (EAPR). A very symbolic moment as UNICEF is well advanced in developing its first country programme of cooperation (2018-2022) with the new democratically elected Government of Myanmar.

Building the relations with parliamentarians for children in Kachin: Champions for children’s rights

For the first time ever, UNICEF Myanmar organised a three day workshop with Kachin state Parliament, aiming at strengthening the relationship with the parliamentarians and to advocate for children’s rights. The first part of the workshop focussed on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), specific child rights concerns in Kachin and Parliament’s role as champions for children’s rights. UNICEF’s Child Protection Team then zoomed in on one key concern for children in Kachin - Mine Action Awareness.
