Community volunteers help tackle malnutrition in Rakhine

Armed with new knowledge, children and mothers in most landmine-contaminated State are eager to teach others

As children and women in Kachin learn about the dangers of landmines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) through Mine Risk Education (MRE) sessions, many are eager to share their new knowledge with their family, friends and others in their community. Read some of their testimonies.

ေက်းရြာေနျပည္သူေတြဟာ ေရရရွိဖို႔အတြက္ အိမ္မွ ဒံုတမိျမစ္ကို နာရီေပါင္းမ်ားစြာ အခ်ိန္ကုန္ခံျပီး ၾကိဳးစားပမ္းစား သယ္ယူခဲ့ၾကရပါတယ္။ ရြာမွာ ေရအဆင္သင့္ မရႏိုင္တဲ့အတြက္ အျပင္မွာ မစင္စြန္႔တဲ့ အေလ့အထတခုက လူထုေတြအၾကား နိစၥဓူဝ အလုပ္တခု ျဖစ္လာခဲ့ပါတယ္။ ဒီအေျခအေနေတြက ထိခ္ိုက္လြယ္တဲ့ အမ်ိဳးသမီးေတြနဲ႔ ကေလးငယ္ေတြအတြက္ အႏၱရာယ္က်ေရာက္ႏိုင္ေျခမ်ားပါတယ္။ ေက်းရြာ အုပ္ခ်ဳပ္ေရးမွဴးမွလည္း “ေရမရွိလို႔ အိမ္သာမရွိ” တာမဆန္းပါဘူးလို႔ ေျပာပါတယ္။

Water on tap makes life flow better in Kayin village

For as long back as people can remember, the four-kilometer walk to the nearest water supply had a big effect on the life of residents of Pyin Kadoe Kone village in Myanmar’s Kayin State. 

As well as forcing villagers to undertake long hours of hard work carrying water home from the Don Ta Mi river, the lack of a ready water supply meant that open defecation was common around the village, making children and women more vulnerable, especially at night. ‘‘No water = no latrines,” said the village head.

အတူလက္တဲြလ်က္ ခရီးဆက္မယ့္ ဆယ္ေက်ာ္သက္မ်ား

“သမီးတို႔ဆယ္ေက်ာ္သက္ေတြ လူမႈေရးအလုပ္ေတြကို အတူတူလုပ္ရတာ တကယ္သေဘာက်ပါတယ္၊ ဒါေၾကာင့္ အဖြဲ႔ဖြဲ႔တာပါ။”

ဒါကေတာ့ ရွမ္းျပည္နယ္၊ ေတာင္ၾကီးျမိဳ႕က အသစ္ဖြဲ႔စည္းလိုက္တဲ့ ဆယ္ေက်ာ္သက္အဖြဲ႔က လူငယ္တစ္ေယာက္ရဲ႕ စကားသံျဖစ္ပါတယ္။

ရွမ္းျပည္နယ္က ျမန္မာနုိင္ငံရဲ႕ အႀကီးဆံုးျပည္နယ္ျဖစ္ျပီး ဆယ္ေက်ာ္သက္ အရြယ္လူငယ္ ၁.၂သန္း ေနထိုင္ပါတယ္။ ျမန္မာနုိင္ငံမွာရွိတဲ့ ဆယ္ေက်ာ္သက္စုစုေပါင္းရဲ႕ ၁၂ရာခိုင္ႏႈန္းျဖစ္ပါတယ္။

ယူနီဆက္က ဆယ္ေက်ာ္သက္မ်ား ပူးေပါင္းပါ၀င္ေရးအစီအစဥ္ကို ပီယာဆန္(Pearson)ရဲ႕ ေငြေၾကး အေထာက္အပံ့နဲ႔ ေဆာင္ရြက္ေနပါတယ္။ UPSHIFTလို႔နာမည္ေပထားတဲ့ ဆယ္ေက်ာ္မ်ား ပူးေပါင္းပါ၀င္ေရးအစီအစဥ္မွာ ဆယ္ေက်ာ္သက္လူငယ္ေတြကို အုပ္စုဖြဲ႔ၿပီး သင္တန္းေတြေပးပါတယ္။ ၂၁ရာစုမွာ ေအာင္ျမင္တဲ့သူမ်ားျဖစ္လာေစရန္ လိုအပ္တဲ့ အရည္အခ်င္းေတြျဖစ္တဲ့ ထိေရာက္စြာ ေျပာဆိုဆက္ဆံျခင္း၊ အမ်ားႏွင့္ပူးေပါင္း လုပ္ေဆာင္ျခင္းနွင့္ အဖြဲ႔လိုက္လုပ္ေဆာင္ျခင္း၊ ျပသနာကို ေျဖရွင္းျခင္း၊ ဆန္းသစ္တီထြင္ျခင္းစတဲ့ ဘ၀အရည္အခ်င္းေတြကို  ေလ့က်င့္ေပးပါတယ္။

Moving forward together: Starting an adolescent-led organization in Shan State

“We really enjoy doing social activities together, so we wanted to form a group.’’

That’s the view from a young person in Shan State in  eastern Myanmar who is part of a brand new civil society organization setting out to address different challenges facing local youth. 

Shan State is the country’s largest state and is home to around 1.2 million adolescents, or 12 percent of the total national adolescent population.  

UNICEF started working on adolescent engagement activities in the state in 2017, with the support of Pearson. Under the UPSHIFT program, adolescents were mobilized into groups and provided with trainings to equip them with 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration and team work, problem solving and creativity.
