Miss Clean and Mr Clean WASH in Schools

March 2019, Myanmar – Seven-year-old Ma Han Su Lwin is very proud of her ‘Miss Clean’ award. 

“I’m feeling good about myself and happy to help other students learn how to improve their personal hygiene,” said Han Su Lwin.

Every month the students at Sin Taung Middle School in Demawso Township in Kayah State observe their daily behaviours and decide among themselves who gets the ‘Mr Clean’ or ‘Miss Clean’ champion awards. It’s a keen competition that builds awareness of water and sanitation issues and personal hygiene.

လူအမ်ားစုအတြက္ ႏွစ္ ၄၀ ၾကာစာသင္ၾကားၿပီးတဲ့ေနာက္ အၿငိမ္းစားယူတယ္ဆိုတာ စာသင္ခန္းေတြကေန အနားယူလုိက္တယ္ဆုိတဲ့သေဘာပါ။ ဒါေပမဲ့ အသက္ ၆၃ ႏွစ္အရြယ္ ဆရာႀကီး ဦးသိန္းထြန္းစိုး အတြက္ေတာ့ ဒီလုိမဟုတ္ပါဘူး။ သူ အၿငိမ္းစားယူၿပီးမၾကာခင္မွာပဲ ဆရာႀကီးက စာဆက္လက္သင္ၾကား ခဲ့ပါတယ္။ ဒီတစ္ခါမွာေတာ့ ကယားျပည္နယ္အေရွ႕ပိုင္း လြိဳင္ေကာ္ၿမိဳ႕ကေန မိနစ္ ၄၀ ၾကာေမာင္းရတဲ့ လြိဳင္လင္ေလးေက်းရြာက ေက်ာင္းျပင္ပ အလယ္တန္းပညာေရး (NFSMSE) စင္တာမွာပဲျဖစ္ပါတယ္။

Retired teacher helps children back to school

For many people, retiring after 40 years of teaching would mean a rest from the classroom but not for Thein Tun Soe, 63. No sooner had he retired, U Thein Tun Soe carried on teaching, this time in a non-formal middle school education (NFMSE) centre in Loilin Lay, 40 minutes’ drive from Loikaw City in the Eastern part of Kayah State.

၁၀ ႏွစ္သမီးေလး နန္းၿငိမ္းစုစံဟာ ထူးခၽြန္တဲ့သူတစ္ေယာက္လုိ႔ ဆရာဆရာမေတြက ေျပာၾကပါတယ္။ ဒါေပမဲ့ သူ႔အတန္းေဖာ္ေတြရဲ႕ အဆက္မျပတ္ စေနာက္မႈေတြေၾကာင့္ သူဟာသင္ခန္းစာေတြလြတ္သြားေလ့ရွိပါတယ္။ နန္းၿငိမ္းစုစံက “သမီး သိပ္စိတ္ဆုိးတာပဲ” လုိ႔မွတ္မွတ္ရရေျပာျပတယ္။ “တစ္ခါတေလ သမီးကိုစတဲ့သူေတြကို မ်က္လုံးေထာင့္ကပ္ၿပီးပဲၾကည့္လိုက္တယ္” လို႔ဆုိတယ္။

Teachers say 10-year-old Nan Nyein Su San is a high achiever but she used to miss lessons due to constant teasing from her classmates. “I got very angry,” remembered Nan Nyein Su San. “Sometimes I just gave the teasers a sideways stare.”

“ဝမ္းပ်က္ဝမ္းေလွ်ာ ေရာဂါဆိုတာ ကြင္းျပင္ေတြ ခ်ဳံေတာေတြထဲ ေတာထုိင္ အညစ္အေၾကးစြန္႔တာနဲ႔ ဆက္စပ္ေနမွန္း ကၽြန္ေတာ္ သိလိုက္ရတဲ့အခ်ိန္မွာ အိမ္သာေတြရဲ႕ အေရးပါမႈကို နားလည္သြားတယ္။ ဒီေတာ့ အိမ္သာေဆာက္ဖို႔ကို ကၽြန္ေတာ္ စိတ္ထက္သန္လာခဲ့တယ္။ ကၽြန္ေတာ့္မွာ ပိုက္ဆံမ်ားမ်ားစားစား မရွိေပမဲ့ ေနာက္မွလုပ္မေနဘဲ အခုပဲ အိမ္သာေဆာက္ေနပါၿပီ”လို႔ ကေလးႏွစ္ေယာက္ ဖခင္ျဖစ္သူက ေျပာျပခဲ့ပါတယ္။

Building your own latrine: Community-led total sanitation in southern Shan State

March, 2019 - Sai Awan, 47, has done something he didn’t plan to do. He has built his family a latrine.

In Pak Kan village in Hsi Seing Township of Myanmar’s Southern Shan State, the father of two is convinced his efforts will improve the health of his family and his village.

 “When I learned that diarrhoea is related to open defecation, I realized the importance of latrines and became passionate about building them. Even though I don’t have much money, I’m doing it now, not later, “ said the father of two.

Married for eleven years, Sai Awan and his family live in a bamboo house and until recently all the family members shared a latrine at a relative’s house or practiced open defecation behind the bushes in the nearby fields.
